Right to Choose

Right to Choose

What is the Right to Choose?

The NHS Choice Framework ensures that all NHS patients in England have the legal right to select their healthcare provider. This means that when a GP refers a patient for an ADHD or autism assessment, the patient usually has the option to choose the service or hospital that they believe best suits their needs.

How do I use the Right to Choose for an ADHD or Autism diagnostic assessment?

To refer yourself for a “right to choose” assessment within the NHS in England, you typically follow these steps:

  1. Research Your Options: Identify the services and providers available for the type of assessment or treatment you need. The NHS website and other resources can provide information on approved providers for specific conditions.
  2. Consult Your GP: Schedule an appointment with your GP to discuss your health concerns and the need for an assessment or treatment. Inform your GP that you want to use your right to choose a specific provider.
  3. Get a Referral: Your GP will need to provide a referral for the assessment or treatment. Ensure your GP understands your preference for a particular provider under the right to choose.
  4. Specify Your Choice: Clearly communicate your chosen provider to your GP. They should include this information in your referral.
  5. Referral Processing: Your GP will send the referral to the chosen provider. You may receive confirmation and further instructions directly from the provider regarding your appointment.
  6. Follow Up: If you do not hear back within a reasonable time, follow up with your GP or the provider to ensure your referral is being processed.

Remember, while the right to choose is generally available, there may be exceptions based on specific circumstances or services. Always check the latest guidelines and discuss any questions with your GP.
